Discovering Japanese Castles

Odawara Castle

An iconic monument

This castle is located in the city of Odawara, about 80 km (50 miles) from Tokyo.
It was originally built in 1495 by the Omori family, but it is best known for its association with the Hojo family, who ruled the Kanto region during the Sengoku period (1467-1603).

The castle was expanded and fortified under the command of Hojo Ujitsuna in the 1500s.

Immersion in Japanese temples

Jurinji Temple

We stay in Odawara to visit the Jurinji Buddhist temple, founded in the 16th century.

The temple was established at a time when the Kanagawa region and the city of Odawara were influenced by the military conflicts and social tensions of the Sengoku period.

Buddhist temples of the time often served as spiritual refuges and gathering places for the locals during times of war and unrest.
