VIRTUAL TOURS EGYPT
Journey through Egyptian tombs
Giza
We begin our journey in the Giza Plateau, built around 2550 to 2450 BCE. The famous necropolis, located 25 km from Cairo, lies in the heart of the desert.
We’ve seen the architectural ancestors of the pyramids with our virtual reality headsets: the mastabas. Around 3000 BCE, these rectangular stone-cut tombs belonged to the elites of ancient Egypt.
The stacking of layers on top of the mastabas marks the birth of the pyramids.

Tomb of Queen Meresankh III
We take you to visit the tomb of Khufu’s granddaughter, the patron of the nearby Great Pyramid. This is the mastaba of Queen Meresankh III. Wife of Khafre, her 5,000-year-old tomb was discovered at Giza by Harvard University archaeologist George Andrew Reisner in 1927. During the virtual tour below, you’ll be able to admire the intricate bas-reliefs as well as the row of 10 women statues carved into the rock in the antechamber. Meresankh III is depicted arm in arm with her mother. This artistic tribute to the women of the royal family was uncommon at the time. Another rare fact is that two of the tomb’s craftsmen are named in the monument.

Saqqara
The tomb of Wahti
Now, let’s head to Saqqara to explore the tomb of Wahti.
This high-ranking official is buried near the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser.
He worked under Pharaoh Nyuserre of the 5th Dynasty, who reigned around 2450 BCE.
The tomb measures 10.5 meters (34.4 feet) long from north to south, and 2.7 meters (8.9 feet) wide from east to west, with a total area of 28 square meters (301.4 square feet).
Its ceiling is 2.7 meters (8.9 feet) above the floor.
This is one of the most impressive tombs of the Old Kingdom. It is particularly remarkable for its scenes of daily life and its hieroglyphic inscriptions detailing the status and functions of this important official.

Tomb of Mehu
Welcome to the Tomb of Mehu!
We remain at Saqqara, within the burial complex of the 5th Dynasty.
This is a mastaba, a type of rectangular tomb characteristic of the Old Kingdom.
Mehu served as vizier during the reign of Pharaoh Nyuserre (who ruled around 2420-2410 BCE). This granted him a very high status at the royal court.
We are entering a family tomb. In addition to Mehu’s tomb, it includes the burials of his son Meryre and his grandson (or possibly another son) Hetepka II.

The surroundings of Luxor
Tomb of Menna
Menna was a scribe of the domains of the Lord of the Two Lands of Upper and Lower Egypt’ during the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom. During your virtual reality tour, you will discover one of the best-preserved tombs in the Theban necropolis. Admire the fresco depicting the Opening of the Mouth ceremony: this sacred ritual was performed on the sarcophagus containing the deceased’s mummy, before sealing the tomb. While burning incense, the priest poured various liquids and resins onto the sarcophagus to purify it. Then, using an adze, he touched the mouth, nose, eyes, and ears of the sarcophagus. This ritual was meant to allow the deceased to eat, breathe, see, and hear during their eternal life.
Don’t miss the fresco of the weighing of the heart. It is one of the first of its kind to appear in a private tomb. On each side of the balance is placed the deceased’s heart and the feather of Ma’at, symbol of truth and justice. Osiris, god of the afterlife, judges the morality of Menna’s life.
